The UCLA’s Tarjan Center has partnered with the Department for a 3-year initiative that will:

  • Provide employment training and opportunities for people with autism
  • Create community connections, and
  • Expand access to timely and relevant information for people who receive regional center services in California

The UCLA Tarjan Center is one of 68 federally designated University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities across the country.

Job Training and Paid Internships

The UCLA Tarjan Center will prepare individuals for paid internships, through our Paid Internship Program, with the Department or UCLA.

The program provides comprehensive workplace training for both the intern and the employer’s staff so both are prepared to work together and thrive.

Before their internship, participants will take part in three Tarjan Center programs:

  • The Workforce Preparation and Placement Program – provides job training, coaching and work experience
  • A 12-week Advocacy Academy – teaches how people can speak up for themselves and others, and about disability policy
  • PEERS® for Careers Program – teaches social skills to find and keep meaningful employment

Meanwhile, Department staff will receive training for Neuroinclusive Employer certification.  This training will teach staff how to work with and support employees with different ways of thinking, learning and communicating.

These paid internships are anticipated to begin in late 2027.

Learning and connecting beyond employment

In addition to the employment program, our community will also have opportunities to learn from the Tarjan Center about disability-related topics and connect with information.  Plans include:

  • A lecture series driven by leaders in disability research and practice
  • Podcasts hosted by disability rights advocates
  • Virtual forums about topics that matter to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families
  • Educational materials in plain language
